CORNIER, Luis “ Papo “, age 53 of Garfield, died on February 20, 2014. He was born in Manhattan, New York, residing there for 3 years before moving to Garfield 50 years ago. Papo attended Garfield School 3 and Garfield High School graduating in 1979. During his young years he wrestled for the Boys & Girls Club. At the age of 25, he started coaching, wrestling for purple wave and continuing for 20 plus years. In 1998, he joined the with Garfield Junior Boilermakers as a coach, kitchen assistant. After his battle with cancer in 2005 and 2006, he returned as equipment manager. Nothing kept him from his true passion, mentoring and coaching the children of Garfield. Papo is survived by his daughter Noelle, his father Ramon, two brothers Willie Cornier and Ramon Cornier and two sisters Carmen Cornier and Evelyn Guzman. He is predeceased by his mother Carmen in 2011. Visiting will be Sunday, February 23, 2014, from 3 to 7 pm at the Aloia Funeral Home, 180 Harrison Ave., Garfield (973-340-7077). In lieu of flowers the family is accepting memorial donations. The funeral will be private.
